Meet the Church Staff
The ministry of St. Paul United Church of Christ is supported and assisted by a committed staff. Staff members serve the congregation on either a full or part-time basis, working closely with the Church Council, the Cabinet, and various committees and organizations of the congregation. Any member of the staff can be contacted by calling the church office (1-313-291-1221) Monday thru Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During the summer months, office hours may be shortened. Please check the Sunday morning worship bulletin for current office hours.
Senior Pastor
The Reverend Dr. Geoffrey Drutchas is the fourteenth Senior Pastor in the history of St. Paul United Church of Christ. He was formally installed by the congregation in September 1988. He has previously held pastorates in Bel Air, Maryland and York, Pennsylvania. He has also served as a full-time campus chaplain at both Tufts and Syracuse Universities. In addition to academic degrees received from Michigan State University, Harvard University, and the Lancaster Theological Seminary, Pastor Drutchas has also studied at Syracuse University and the Wayne State University Law School. Pastor Drutchas is the author of a book, Is Life Sacred? (Pilgrim Press), and numerous articles in the fields of Christian ethics, history, and historic art and architecture. At St. Paul United Church, Pastor Drutchas leads worship, visits parishioners in need of special pastoral help, oversees day-to-day church administration, and offers bible study, confirmation classes and other adult education programs. He is married to Eileen Vernor Drutchas. They have a college age son, Griffin.
Director of Christian Education
Cheryl Herkimer-Schalm is a three-quarter time, professional Director of Christian Education for St. Paul United Church of Christ. Installed as director in September 1998, she works closely with the St. Paul Christian Education Committee in administering the Church School program and coordinating Youth Fellowship activities. Mrs. Schalm grew up as a part of the St. Paul United Church congregation. A graduate of Truman High School and the Southeastern Academy in Kissimmee, Florida for professional training in the travel field, she hass a Bachelor of Arts degree in Family Ecology from Spring Arbor University. She is also certified as a Family Life Educator. Before joining the St. Paul United Church staff Mrs. Schalm worked with BTI America, an executive travel firm. Married to Jim Schalm, who leads the young adult Sunday School class, Cheryl co-parents with him and their six children, who are all enrolled in the church school program. For many years the Schalms have been active foster parents. They have also been involved on a volunteer basis with the SIDS Alliance, an organization devoted to helping families deal with a sudden infant death.
Parish Nurses
Mary Smith, R.N., and Kathy Williams, R.N. each serve on a part-time basis as parish nurses for St. Paul United Church of Christ.
Mary Smith, our Parish Nurse for Pastoral Outreach, is a 1958 graduate of the Harper Hospital School of Nursing and subsequently received a Bachelor of Arts in Gerontology at Spring Arbor University. Her thirty year nursing career has included work in obstetrics and gerontology at Oakwood Hospital-Dearborn, Annapolis Hospital-Westland, and the Heartland Nursing Care Center-Allen Park. She received her parish nurse training through Oakwood Hospital and in her work at St. Paul Church focuses on pastoral outreach and bereavement issues.
Kathy Williams, our Parish Nurse for Programs and Visitation, graduated from Romulus High School and received Bachelor degrees in both Philosophy and Nursing Sciences and a Master of Education in Health Education from Wayne State University. She is also certified as an Educational Specialist in Instructional Technology. Although Ms. Williams began her career as a registered nurse at both Deaconess and Wayne County Hospitals, she subsequently served for over 25 years as a school nurse in the Taylor Public Schools. Ms. Williams has also received her training as parish nurse from Oakwood Hospital. At St. Paul Church she assists the senior pastor in visitation, as well coordinates and leads health-related programs.
Director of Music
Mark Ennis has served as a third-time Director of Music for St. Paul United Church since Spring 2000. In the director’s role he not only leads the chancel choir, a hand bell choir, and the Cherub Choir but also auditions and schedules special worship music. As a gifted vocalist, Mr. Ennis serves as a soloist, cantor, and hymn leader for Sunday morning worship throughout the year. Mr. Ennis, who is a graduate of Taylor Center High School and the Specs-Howard School of Broadcasting, is currently employed at Lifetouch Photographers. For nearly 20 years, Mr. Ennis was choir director for an Allen Park church. He has also been actively involved in such community music groups as the Seaway Chorale and the Max Davey Singers. He is currently director of the Taylor Community Chorus and a member of the Taylor Cultural Arts Commission. Mr. Ennis is married to Sandy Ennis, who is a member of the Chancel Choir.
Church Organist and Children’s Choir Director
Sally Sigman provides special music for our Sunday morning worship services and other worship occasions, such as mid-week services, weddings, and funerals. As resident musician, she also makes use of the church’s pipe organ and our two sanctuary pianos (manual and digital) to provide an accompaniment for the Chancel Choir at Wednesday night rehearsals and during their Sunday morning singing. Employed as an organist for St. Paul United Church of Christ on a part-time basis since September 1989, Mrs. Sigman has served two different stints as interim choir director and continues to lead the choir on occasions in the absence of the music director. She also directs the Children’s Choir. Mrs. Sigman previously served as an organist for a Trenton church. Mrs. Sigman and her husband, Glenn, are grandparents to two granddaughters who participate in our church’s music program.
