Welcome to the Lenten Fish Suppers at St. Paul United Church of Christ!
Every year we get asked a lot of questions about our fish supers.
We are glad that you are our guest this evening. St. Paul United Church of Christ has been hosting suppers since the 1890's. We offer a great meal at a great price. The News-Herald Newspapers have called our Lenten fish suppers among the best available in the Downriver area. Each year we host three sit-down suppers with a carry-out option, plus two drive-thru suppers on the alternate Fridays. We begin serving at 4 p.m. but are often ready to welcome guests as early as 3:30 p.m. We finish serving at 7 p.m. Carry-outs for sit-down suppers are available for pick-tip indoors through the west side entrance of the church. Drive-thru suppers are served from a special "hut" on the east side drive that horseshoes around our church.
Although many places offer diners a pressed fillet from minced fish, we serve only the highest quality wild-caught, center-cut North Atlantic cod. Lightly battered and either fried or baked (depending on your preference)--all right in our own kitchen--it never tastes too "fishy." Every fish supper comes with French fries or macaroni and cheese (again, depending on your preference); self-serve helpings of our special St. Paul Cole Slaw, Italian bread; and your choice of beverage--coffee or tea. For dessert, you can choose from a wide array of fresh-baked pies. Our St. Paul Youth Group also sells canned soda in the Fellowship Hall where the dinners are served.
Guests coming for a sit-down dinner are asked to take a seat in a sanctuary pew until an usher invites you to step forward through the arched doorway to purchase tickets. Our volunteers try to keep your wait to a minimum. There is virtually no wait once you leave the sanctuary and proceed to the ticket table for our Lenten fish suppers. Both our dining rooms—Fellowship Hall and the West Room—are on the first floor. There are no stairs to climb.
On your way to the ticket table through the arched doorway at the front of the sanctuary, you may hang your coat on the hallway racks next to the St. Paul sculpture courtyard. A wheelchair accessible "knock and lock" lavatory is available down the hall beyond the coat racks--second door to the right. Additional lavatories are located at the church's west lobby. At this time you may also want to check out our adjoining church parlor (right across from the ticket table) which features freshly-made baked goods.
After purchasing your supper ticket, step directly up to the serving table in Fellowship Hall for your tray and to select a fresh-baked dessert. Next comes the "hot table" where fish, fries, and macaroni and cheese are served (along with condiments--lemon and tartar sauce). Although our fish suppers are not hosted on an "all-you-can-eat" basis, our volunteers are generous with portions. We don't want you to leave our fish suppers hungry. If you would like more, ask for it.
As you leave the "hot table," a volunteer will carry your tray and escort you, as well as your family or friends, to the next-available table seating in either Fellowship Hall or the West Room. Please note: due to the crowds that we serve at the Lenten fish suppers guests may not hold or reserve seats for others unless they are already in line at the Fellowship Hall serving tables.
Once you are seated, you will find Cole Slaw and bread available on the table on a "family style" basis. Please serve yourself Depending upon your preference, our volunteers will serve you coffee or tea. Please relax and enjoy a great meal in a friendly and congenial environment.
Take-home containers are available for food that you do not finish. Pint containers of Cole Slaw are also available for purchase. Often at the close of the evening other food items are also sold. Please ask one of our volunteers for information or assistance.
We hope that you will come again to our fish suppers. Pass the word on to your friends. Fish supper dates are announced each winter through our lighted outdoor signboard on Goddard Road, a published announcement in the News-Herald Newspapers, and individual mailed notices. If you would like to be added to our annual Lenten fish supper mailing list, please speak with one of the sanctuary ushers.
