Fellowship and Service Organizations

"And there are varieties of service, but the same Lord.."      --- 1 Corinthians 12:5

In addition to collecting food for local families in need, housing the homeless through the ChristNet emergency shelter ministry, and supporting other ministries coordinated by our national denomination, St. Paul United Church of Christ  serves others through the following fellowship and service organizations.

Sewing Guild

The St. Paul Sewing Guild meets on a monthly to sew and knit for charitable causes-cancer pads, caps for preemies, and blankets for children with A.I.D.S at Detroit area hospitals.  The sewing circle, which meets at the church the first Thursday morning of each month at 9 a.m., finishes with a time of refreshments, fellowship, and inspirational sharing.  The group offers a standing invitation to all: "Come join us to help others."

Dorcas Society

The Dorcas Society is a service and fellowship organization for church women.  Traditionally, the group has taken a special interest in projects that assist our church's ministry to young people.  The group also supports the ministry and outreach of First Step, the domestic violence shelter for western Wayne County.  The Dorcas Society takes its name from Dorcas, an early leader of the Christian church, who was much loved for her work with the poor (Acts 9:36).  Dorcas members meet the third Thursday night of each month, September through May, 7:30 p.m.

Red Hat Society - Red Hot Purples Angels Chapter

Over the past decade Red Hat Societies have emerged across the United States as coming-of-age organizations for women. Those over fifty are entitled to wear red hats to all gatherings; those younger than fifty wear pink hats instead as red hatters-in-training. It’s all for fun at St. Paul United Church of Christ where our chapter of the Red Hat Society is known as the Red Hot Purple Angels. Monthly gatherings and outings are announced through the Tidings newsletter, Morning Tide bulletin, and individual mailed notices. Whether your hat color is red or pink, you are invited to join the company of St. Paul women for the fun of it. Call the church office for more information.

Women's Fellowship

The Women's Fellowship at St. Paul United Church of Christ meets on the second Thursday of each month at 12 noon.   Sometimes a guest speaker is featured.  In other instances, individual members lead the group for a discussion program or informal conversation. The Women's Fellowship takes an active role active in helping our church host annual dinners and rummage sales which raise funds for the maintenance and improvement of the church and for the purchase of new church equipment.

St. Paul Softball Teams

In late spring as the Detroit Tigers get ready to go to bat, so too do our St. Paul softball teams. Two co-ed teams participate in games seasonally organized by the Downriver Church League. The games are held every Tuesday evening on the baseball diamonds of the Brownstown Recreational Center at the southeast corner of Telegraph and Kings Roads. On at least one mid-summer night, our two St. Paul teams compete against each other. An all-church potluck is usually arranged for that evening prior to the start of the game. Team sign-ups and all subsequent games are announced through the Morning Bulletin and monthly Tidings newsletter. New players are always welcomed.

Men's Fellowship

The Men's Fellowship meets monthly at times announced by the church newsletter and Sunday Morning Tide bulletin.  In addition to fellowship activities, their focus is on church-related projects that enhance our congregation's overall ministry.  New participants are always welcome.

Boy Scouts

For more than a half century, St. Paul United Church of Christ has sponsored a Boy Scout troop. Church members have also provided significant leadership for local and district-wide Scouting activities. Our church’s Scouting heritage is affirmed every February on Sunday morning worship with a special Scout Sunday Service. Boy Scout Troop #825 meets in Fellowship Hall every Monday night. Contact the church office for more information about enrolling your son or grandson.
